Top 10 Box Office Hit Hollywood Movies for Christmas 2009

This Christmas 2009, Hollywood movie fans flocked to movie houses to support the high-profile films this holiday weekend.

Approximately $278 million made it at the box office which is a record-breaking revenue and beat the July 2008 of approximately $ 253 million wherein The Dark Knight was released.

Avatar, the 3-D epic had the lead earned $75 million for 20th Century Fox, according to studio estimates. Remarkably, it was only down 3 percent from its opening weekend total of $77.4 million. (Blockbuster films usually drop by 30-50 percent in the second weekend.) In 10 days after its release, Avatar has $212 million in the US alone, and can be towards a worldwide gross of over $1 billion.

"This thing is going to be playing and playing, I can tell you that," Bert Livingston, 20th Century Fox distribution executive said. "There's a lot of business out there. Everybody's got good movies out."

The second box office hit film was Sherlock Holmes, Guy Ritchie's reboot of the franchise by starring Robert Downey Jr. as Arthur Conan Doyle's detective. This Warner Bros. film opened with a weekend total of $65.4 million, including a Christmas Day debut record of $24.9 million.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel which opened Wednesday, took in 50.2 million U.S. dollars landed on the third spot and made $77.1 million in the five days of its release. The film, also from Fox, earned an impressive $18.8 million on Wednesday alone. The strong start suggests that Squeakquel was likely to surpass its 2007 original, which made $217 million.

Incidentally, this film also had Filipino internationally-acclaimed singer Charice Pempengco who plays as herself.

Meanwhile, here is the complete list of the Top 10 Box Office Hit Hollywood movies for Christmas 2009 and their earnings so far.

1.0 Avatar, $75 million.

2.0 Sherlock Holmes, $65.4 million.

3.0 Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, $50.2 million.

5.0 Up in the Air, $11.8 million.

6.0 The Blind Side, $11.7 million.

7.0 The Princess and the Frog, $8.7 million.

8.0 Nine, $5.5 million.

9.0 Did You Hear About the Morgans? $5 million.

10.0 Invictus, $4.4 million.

Michael Jackson This It Movie made $101 million in 5 days

Michael Jackson This It Movie pulled in $101 million around the world in its first five days, and distributor Sony expands the film beyond his farewell performance less than two weeks away.

"He's just loved everywhere on the planet," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony. "It doesn't matter if it's Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, South America. Every continent in the world loved him and his music."

In Britain, where Jackson had planned a series of 50 concerts in London from July, the film has earned £ 4.6m. In the United States, where it is number 1 at the box office, it took $ 32.5 million. The film has 10.4 million U.S. dollars in Japan, U.S. $ 6.3 million in Germany and 5.8 million in France.

This Is It captures Jackson backstage performances in the weeks before his death in June, as he felt for his performances in London. The studio paid $60 million for film rights for the video.

The film was scheduled for a theatrical journey of two weeks, but the studio has extended this week a little 'more in the United States and a country by country, however, with most of the territories, possibly starting one to three weeks of the time extra game, Bruer said.

Michael Jackson This Is it Movie: A Musical Mosaic?

This coming October 18,2009, the Michael Jackson This Is it Movie will finally be released worldwide which will run for 2 weeks only.

But then, there have been no advance previews, in which leaving ticket buyers guessing about what they'll see. The film was assembled from intended promo interviews, rehearsal tapes and behind-the-scenes footage planned for a future DVD of Jackson's never-to-be comeback series of 50 concerts.

According to director Kenny Ortega, the Michael Jackson This Is it movie is a musical mosaic.

"It's the puzzling together of remnants to create something that had continuity to it," Director Kenny Ortega says. "It borrows from both the documentary and the concert film idea, but it's neither of the two. … I said to Sony not to promote it as a concert film because it's going to confuse people. We never were a concert. We never got that far. We had three weeks left of rehearsal."

"Sometimes Michael was onstage, and the band was playing, but he wasn't singing. He was watching, listening," Ortega added. "But then he would start to sing (another time), and I had to paste things together to create a full beginning, middle and end performance." The movie will weave in video backgrounds that were designed to play on a giant concert screen, in which he calls the movie "a musical mosaic."

But no matter what it may look like, fans of Michael Jackson will definitely love it and cherish it for the rest of their lives.

Michael Jackson This Is it Official Movie Trailer

More than a week from now, the much awaited Michael Jackson This Is it Movie will be shown. Although it will run for only 2 weeks, it is expected to be phenomenal as it will be the last chance to see Michael Jackson very much alive.

This Is It will offer Michael Jackson fans and music lovers worldwide a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the performer as he developed, created and rehearsed for his sold-out concerts that would have taken place beginning this summer in London's O2 Arena.

Kenny Ortega who is Michael's creative partner and director of the This Is It stage show is also one of the producers for Michael Jackson's This Is It movie. This Is it: Michael Jackson New Song coming soon

Sony Entertainment is scheduled to release the new song of the Michael Jackson entitled This Is It this coming October 12. According to MSN Entertainment News, the song will feature the backing vocals of the Jackson brothers.

Two weeks after, a two-disc set will be released which will include the scenes from the rehearsals of the King of Pop for his supposed concert in London, as well as some of the greatest hits from his career. Additionally, there will be songs that Michael had never released and his poem named Planet Earth.

Earlier in the recent 2009 MTV Video Music Awards where Janet Jackson is also present, the trailer of the said album was shown as an official tribute to Michael Jackson. This is a reminder for the nominees for the different awards that once in their lifetime, a pop icon was alive to inspire them.

"Michael Jackson: This Is It", the film tribute will be released on October 28 on a limited two-week theater showing worldwide.

As we all know, Michael Jackson died on June 25. His memories will always be remembered not only by fans, but also the whole music industry.
