Indonesia Earthquake death toll reached 1,100

A very powerful earthquake hits Pandang, Indonesia last Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. (1015 GMT, 6:15 a.m. EDT), with a magnitude of 7.6. A minimum of 500 buildings collapsed or were badly damaged, according to Disaster Management Agency spokesman Priyadi Kardono.

As of this posting, the death toll reached 1,110 and is still expected to grow as rescue operation is being done. Reports said thousands are still buried down under the shattered buildings which includes two hospitals. The earthquake also caused some fires, and loss of power and communication.



The next day, another strong earthquake shook Indonesia on Sumatra island at 08:52 a.m. local time (0152GMT), with a magnitude of 6.9. This is around 180 miles (280 kilometers) from the epicenter of the previous one. At least 200 were found dead as thousands are still missing.

Meanwhile, US President Barack Obama vowed to support the victims. It is known that he spent a part of his childhood in Indonesia.
